In a recent article by HME News, U.S. Rehab is excited to announce the launch of the ATP Academy this January. This innovative online program is designed to help rehab technicians advance their careers by becoming certified Assistive Technology Professionals (ATPs).
Comprehensive Course Content
The ATP Academy offers a robust curriculum that covers essential topics such as:
- Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the human body and its functions.
- Mobility and Seating: Manual and power wheelchair techniques and principles for optimal patient supports, including custom seating and alternative drive controls.
- Computer Technologies: Applying information and communication technology (ICT) concepts, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
- Service and Delivery: Standards of practice for providing effective and compassionate care.
To enhance the program's effectiveness, U.S. Rehab has partnered with Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) on an ATP Guidance Program that provides a pathway for rehab technicians who are certified by the Assistive Mobility Repair Group (AMRG) to become certified as ATPs.
The two programs, along with an ATP Fundamentals Course offered by RESNA, all work toward the same goal of increasing the number of ATPs in the market but in different ways. The ATP Guidance Program is heavy on mentorship for less experienced rehab technicians, for example, and the ATP Fundamentals Course is offered live over a set timeframe.
Flexible Learning
One of the standout features of the ATP Academy is its flexibility. Participants can complete the coursework at their own pace, making it easier to balance professional development with their existing responsibilities. This flexibility extends to completing modules outside of regular working hours, accommodating various schedules.
Development and Expertise
The ATP Academy has been meticulously developed over the past year with input from a coursework designer and VGM Education. Leading the program is Cindi Petito, Director of Clinical Networks at VGM & Associates.
Addressing Industry Needs
With a significant number of ATPs nearing retirement, there is an urgent need to train new professionals to meet the growing demand in the industry. The ATP Academy is a proactive step towards addressing this need, ensuring that the next generation of ATPs is well-prepared to provide high-quality care.
Stay tuned for more updates as the ATP Academy launches!
