U.S. Rehab and NCART Advocate for Enhanced Accessibility and Support for Individuals with Disabilities

U.S. Rehab and NCART joined forces on September 24, 2024, to advocate for enhanced accessibility and support for individuals with disabilities. The organizations hosted approximately 70 meetings with various members of the House and Senate, bringing together providers and manufacturers to support their legislative requests.

During these meetings, U.S. Rehab and NCART urged members of Congress to support H.R. 5371 and the newly released Senate Companion bill S. 5154, which aims to allow consumers the choice to upgrade to a titanium or carbon fiber manual wheelchair. This legislation is crucial for ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to the best possible mobility solutions for their specific lifestyle.

"It was truly exciting to see so many U.S. Rehab members in attendance, as well as national providers, manufacturers, and technology companies coming together to support our industry,” said Tyler Mahncke, President of U.S. Rehab. “We made a significant difference in D.C., and we are already seeing progress with our ask on the carbon and titanium consumer choice upgrade bill.”

Additionally, the organizations called on Congress to contact CMS' Administrator Brooks-La Sure to expedite the coverage process for power standing systems. This health-beneficial technology is essential for maintaining the independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

“The focus on meeting with representatives and senators on committees of jurisdiction will provide benefits for the industry in 2025 and beyond. This is just the first step, as the CRT industry will continue to educate legislators about the incredible value they bring to constituents with CRT products and services,” said Wayne Grau, Executive Director of NCART.

Lastly, U.S. Rehab and NCART initiated conversations about the need for Congress to consider supporting providers’ economic and operational challenges in providing services to consumers. They emphasized the importance of paying for evaluations, assessments, deliveries, adjustments, and other services to avoid access issues for consumers. These financial pressures have been exacerbated by increased gas prices, labor costs, and insurance costs.

U.S. Rehab and NCART remain committed to advocating for policies that enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and ensure they have access to the necessary resources and technologies.
