![Celebrating Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month]()
April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month (LLLDAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness, celebrating resilience, and fostering community among the 5.6 million people in the U.S. who live with limb loss or limb difference. The role of orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) providers and clinicians is crucial in transforming the lives of these individuals. This month, OPGA shares our deep appreciation for all those who make an impact in the lives of individuals with limb loss and limb difference.
The scope of limb loss is wide. Over 5.6 million Americans live with limb loss or limb differences, including 2.3 million individuals with limb loss and 3.4 million with limb differences. Each year, approximately 185,000 amputations occur in the United States, which translates to 300 to 500 amputations performed daily. The primary causes of limb loss are vascular disease (54%), trauma (45%), and cancer (less than 2%). Hospital charges for patients who underwent an amputation totaled $8.7 billion in 2013, and lifetime healthcare costs for people with limb loss are significantly higher than for those without.
O&P professionals are at the forefront of transforming lives for individuals with limb loss and limb difference. Their work goes beyond fitting prosthetic devices; it encompasses comprehensive care, including emotional support, rehabilitation, and ongoing adjustments to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. The expertise in tailoring O&P solutions is crucial for improving mobility, functionality, and overall quality of life. Through personalized care and rehabilitation programs, O&P professionals help patients adapt to their new devices and regain independence.
“My own journey to find the solution that works best for me as an amputee has underscored the importance of clinical expertise in O&P,” stated Nikki Grace, Director of OPGA. “Prosthetists and orthotists are the clinicians with the most knowledge about these solutions, and their role is crucial in guiding patients through their options.”
In addition, the advocacy efforts of those in the O&P field raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with limb loss and limb difference, promoting equitable access to medical care and prosthetic devices. This drives policy changes and secures funding for research and development, as well as fostering a sense of community throughout the O&P field.
“I have seen firsthand the specific barriers that hinder access to care, continuity of care, and consistency. These barriers often prevent individuals from receiving the support they need to thrive."
At the cutting edge of medical innovation, O&P professionals continuously seek new technologies and methods to enhance prosthetic and orthotic care, significantly impacting patients' lives.
“It is my hope that everyone in the O&P profession seizes the opportunities to increase access to quality care and improve mobility and quality of life for patients across the nation. Whether through emerging technology and innovation or by strengthening our collective voice, we can pave the way for a brighter future for all in O&P."
Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month is a time to honor the strength and resilience of individuals living with limb loss and limb difference. It is also a time to recognize the indispensable role of O&P providers and clinicians who work tirelessly to improve the lives of patients.
Thank you to all O&P providers who ensure that everyone has a voice and that the limb loss and limb difference community continues to thrive.
