Donate Your Small Talk

Published in Legislative Updates on September 16, 2019

Fall is in the air, school started again, you’re back on a normal schedule and your day-to-day life has kicked back into full gear. Many of you are ramping up to your busiest time of the year. As you see more people day-to-day, you have more opportunities to talk about what’s important to you and your business.

When it comes to marketing or awareness of an issue or product, word of mouth, recommendations and customer reviews continue to dominate and be one of the most trustworthy forms of marketing. According to Nielsen, 83% of consumers say they either completely or somewhat trust recommendations from family, colleagues, and friends about products and services – making these recommendations the highest ranked source for trustworthiness. What does this mean to you? Talk about the issues you care about! The simple act of sharing information can make a difference.

As we continue to advocate and ask representatives to cosponsor the Breast Cancer Patient Equity Act, we need more people to do the same. Have you taken action and asked your representatives to sign-on? If you have, that’s great! If they haven’t signed on yet, they need to continue to hear from you and people who use custom breast prostheses.

Since you’re busy, here are a few ways that you can help this cause by donating your small talk.

  • If you are a business owner, make sure you talk to each of your customers at checkout about the legislation. Lucky for you, we’ve made this easy with the Let Her Decide toolkit

  • Small talk doesn’t have to happen in real life. Share a Let Her Decide post on Facebook with your friends and family.

Small talk happens everywhere. How many times have you talked about the weather this week to a total stranger? Maybe use some of these statistics instead!

  • 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer.

  • 268,600 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2019.

  • 1 of 3,500,000 women in the U.S. have a family history of breast cancer.

  • 144,000 will undergo a mastectomy this year.

  • There are 4 options after a mastectomy: surgical reconstruction, off-the-shelf breast prosthesis, custom breast prosthesis, or to go flat. Women typically get surgical reconstruction.
